Why water shortages and droughts

February 10 , 2022

Some people may wonder, water covers most of the earth, why is it in short supply?

However, only 3% of the world's water is fresh, and the vast majority of it is unusable for humans. Therefore, water scarcity is an urgent and important issue for a large portion of the global population. The United Nations defines water scarcity as “a scarcity of availability due to material shortages, or a resource scarcity due to an agency’s failure to ensure regular supply or due to a lack of adequate infrastructure”.

About 1.1 billion people do not have access to water. Inadequate sanitation is a bigger problem. Millions of people die every year from waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and diarrheal diseases. The problem is most acute in Africa, the Middle East and most of Asia. The United Nations estimates that by 2030, half of the world's population will live in water-stressed areas.

Why is water scarcity such a big problem?

A growing body of research has reiterated the importance of water in geopolitical stability. Human health and agricultural issues are also very important. Leaders will use access to water as a political tool or a way to consolidate political power. Drought events are often associated with immigration and regime change, Karl Bruch, director of international programs at the Environmental Law Institute, told Scientific American.

The changing global climate is also having an impact on the global hydrological system. It damages the livelihoods of millions of farmers and affects the food they produce.

What is the reason for the lack of water?

One of the biggest causes of global water scarcity is pollution. Pollution comes in many forms and almost always makes water unfit for human consumption. Chemical or oil spills can permanently contaminate water. Any industrial waste or faeces dumped in rivers or oceans without proper treatment can contaminate water sources. Farmers' use of pesticides and other fertilizers can also lead to water pollution if chemicals seep into groundwater or underground aquifers.

The misuse of water resources is another big problem that leads to water scarcity. Once water starts to run out, poor resource management or overuse of water often leads to future problems. Much of the Middle East has been turned into a desert due to excessive water use, which has taken a particularly heavy toll on countries such as Iran. According to The Guardian, the United Arab Emirates has further invested in desalination and water treatment plants to meet demand for fresh water. As the global population continues to grow, the pressure on the world's water resources will only increase.

What will be the impact of a prolonged drought?

Prolonged droughts have also led to water shortages. With little rain on the horizon, rivers, streams and lakes will soon dry up. This doesn't give people anything to use. Drought directly dampened economic growth and exacerbated poverty in affected areas. Since droughts are often unpredictable, managing water resources effectively and efficiently is critical to weathering any problems. However, building resilience to water scarcity is a daunting task, sometimes difficult in areas that are naturally very arid.

The actions (or inactions) of governments around the world can also lead to water scarcity. Some countries use water as a political tool to control, limit and allow its use as a way of exercising power and influence. On the other hand, Human Rights Watch reported on water shortages as authorities in western Thailand and Bangladesh failed to take appropriate action to reduce water pollution.

What are the effects of water scarcity?

Along with the apparent lack of drinking water, hunger is one of the biggest effects of water scarcity. The lack of water directly leads to reduced crop yields and livestock deaths, which can quickly lead to food shortages. Hunger can lead to conflict and instigate migration efforts that are both dangerous and difficult to manage. The United Nations says food production should increase by 60 percent by 2050 to avoid political unrest, civil war, terrorism and other problems. Hungry or thirsty children often don't go to school, which means education suffers as well.

Water scarcity can take a huge toll on global energy output. Many energy sources rely on large amounts of fresh water to function properly. For example, in 2010, thermal power plants accounted for 38% of U.S. freshwater withdrawals. Unless there is a greater shift to alternative energy sources, water demand remains high.

Water scarcity slows overall economic output. It is difficult to have a thriving and vibrant economy without guaranteed access to clean water. The prevalence of waterborne diseases can severely impact general health and worker productivity. Lack of water makes it very difficult to properly bathe and clean household items. Unsanitary conditions foster poor living and working conditions and drag down economic productivity.
it involves business

Many businesses want easy and convenient access to water. But they may not choose to enter certain areas if water is scarce. They see water as a competitive advantage when it comes to their operations.

Unemployment could rise if businesses and industries don't penetrate certain areas or leave. This greatly affected local communities and devastated the population. Lack of jobs and opportunities reduces income, taxes and free movement of commerce.

Therefore, the problem of water resources has always been an eternal topic of human beings. How to alleviate the shortage of water resources, Airwaterawg has been working hard, and believes that the technology of producing Drinking water from air can alleviate this problem to a certain extent.
