AWG design can prevent pollutants in the air

November 18 , 2021
With the development of society, drinking water has become less and less, so a disruptive technology has appeared on the market that can provide a better choice: Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG).

Consider the fact that there is actually an unlimited supply of drinking water in our air humidity. The earth’s atmosphere contains 375 billion gallons of water, and the world’s population uses approximately 5.2 billion gallons of water every day (about 70% of which are used for agricultural applications). Therefore, the impact of AWG's collection of atmospheric water for drinking water is negligible.

Atmospheric water generators have the potential to produce fresh and environmentally friendly water when needed, without generating plastic waste or carbon footprint bottled water. For those who rely on municipal water supplies and have potential drinking water contaminants, especially those caused by aging infrastructure such as lead pipes, Office Air Water Generators provides a way to disconnect from traditional water supplies.

Of course, drawing water from the air does not guarantee that the water is free of pollutants, especially particles and lead. Compared with municipal drinking water, the US Environmental Protection Agency's list of air pollutants is very small. As you can imagine, when it comes to drinking water, this list of air pollutants is seriously inadequate.

This means that the design of the AWG must be able to prevent airborne pollutants from appearing in the produced drinking water. The system design should include multiple barriers to prevent airborne pollutants, including point-of-use drinking water treatment technology and other disinfection methods, and ultraviolet light to ensure water safety. In addition, the materials used to construct the AWG system must be safe and must not immerse contaminants in the product water.

Two main techniques are used in commercial AWGs: cooling condensation and wet drying. The operation of the cooling and condensation AWG technology is similar to that of a dehumidifier. The air temperature is cooled below the dew point, causing the water vapor in the atmosphere to condense and then be collected.

The wet-drying water generation uses a concentrated brine solution to adsorb water, and then heats the desiccant and then cools the condensed water to extract the water.

The relative humidity of the air and the air temperature are the main determinants of the water production efficiency of AWG. Generally, the higher the atmospheric humidity and the higher the temperature, the higher the water production efficiency.

Atmospheric water generators used for drinking water must be certified and contain no potentially harmful pollutants captured from the air or leaked from the materials of their construction. Most importantly, AWG must produce microbiologically safe drinking water.

In addition to material safety, the key components of the certification are daily productivity, energy efficiency, including microbiological safety and performance testing of any integrated filters included in the system design.

For those who lack the basic human rights of clean, fresh drinking water, atmospheric water generators may be a solution. The strategic deployment of Small Commercial Atmospheric Water Generator in water-scarce areas may be the first step for the local population to achieve freedom of water use. For those municipal systems that have inherent water quality problems due to aging infrastructure, AWG provides the option to disconnect the local water supply.

Of course, this technology faces challenges, especially in terms of energy consumption and water production efficiency. However, if these challenges are met, this technology can have a devastating impact on future drinking water supplies.
